GUWAHATI: All types of groundwater extraction in any form, including boring, has been prohibited in Guwahati without proper permission from the Central Ground Water Board.
This was informed through an order issued from the office of Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (M) Pallav Gopal Jha on Tuesday, March 8.
Furthermore, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Commissioner has been directed to enforce strict vigil of such uncontrolled boring and extraction of groundwater.
For obtaining the NOC for extracting groundwater, applicants will have to apply online at cgwa-noc.gov.in
This decision has been taken based on the complaints from different quarters of the city regarding haphazard and unscientific extraction of groundwater without proper permission from concerned authorities by various persons, builders and societies.
Moreover, due to rapid urbanisation and development activities, the areas for natural infiltration of water has been lessening day by day leading to decreasing natural recharge of groundwater.
