GUWAHATI: The Assam Police Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment for 2024 commenced today on August 16 in Guwahati, marking the beginning of a critical evaluation of the fitness levels of police personnel across the state.

In the previous year's assessment conducted in two phases, 1.6% of the personnel (1,223 out of 76,313) were categorised as obese, with a BMI of 30 or higher. The force is being hopeful that this figure will see a significant reduction in the 2024 assessment.

This year's assessment process is expected to be faster and more efficient. Unlike last year, when both height and weight had to be recorded, this year's procedure only requires the recording of weight, as the heights of most personnel have already been pre-recorded from the 2023 data.

An example of the ongoing assessment is the BMI of a participant, which was recorded at 25.12 in 2023 and has slightly improved to 25.02 in today's assessment of 2024.
