Eyewitnesses in the neighbourhood described it as more of a cylinder blast followed by smoke and fire engulfing the area. Fire tenders rushed to the spot shortly after being alerted.
“Approximately six rescue vans have been deployed and our team is currently trying to bring the fire under control,” a Fire & Emergency Services official told GPlus.
At the time of filing this report, no casualties had been reported. However, fire-fighting operations were still underway, and officials said the full extent of the damage was yet to be assessed.
A resident of the area said, "It has been more than an hour and the fire is still not doused."
Residents were seen assisting each other to safety, while traffic was temporarily disrupted in the vicinity to allow emergency vehicles unimpeded access.
Further investigation into the cause of the fire is expected once the situation is brought under control.
