GUWAHATI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs on Monday, February 3, submitted a notice against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, accusing her of breaching parliamentary privilege, ethics, and propriety.

The notice was filed following Gandhi’s reported remarks referring to President Droupadi Murmu as a “poor thing” during the President’s address to a joint sitting of Parliament on January 31.

In their letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, the BJP MPs alleged that Gandhi’s comments were “unparliamentary, derogatory, and demeaning,” claiming they were intended to lower the dignity of the President’s office. “We write this with great dismay about certain unparliamentary, derogatory, and demeaning remarks recently made by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, against the Hon'ble President of India, which warrant serious consideration and disciplinary action,” the letter stated.

The BJP leaders argued that Gandhi’s remarks reflected an “elitist and anti-tribal mindset,” suggesting she “is yet to understand the struggle and sensitivity of a tribal poor.” They urged the Rajya Sabha Chairman to take cognisance of the matter and initiate appropriate disciplinary action against her.

The controversy erupted after Gandhi was reported to be saying, "...The President was getting very tired by the end...She could hardly speak, poor thing..." during an informal interaction.
