GUWAHATI: Based on a complaint, the Bureau Of Investigation Economic Offences (BIEO), on Thursday raided a cooperative society in the Morigaon district of Assam.
The BIEO team including the Supply Superintendent raided the Shilpukhuri Cooperative Society under the Morigaon district of Assam.
The complaint stated rice allotted to the National Food Security Scheme for the previous month, i.e, January 2023 was not distributed to the real beneficiaries. Instead, this rice was sold at the open market to gain profit.
During a raid conducted by the BIEO, the investigation revealed that various warehouses of the Shilpukhuri Cooperative Committee under the Morigaon district stored sacks of rice which were allotted for distribution to the beneficiaries of the National Food Security Scheme.
The president of the cooperative was present during the raid but the secretary was not.
The secretary has been identified as Pranjaljyoti Kakati and the president has been identified as Ziabur Haque.
The BIEO demanded various documents be presented to verify the storage of the stock but the cooperative authorities failed to do so.
A total of 2,012 quintals of rice have been seized and some of the authorities are being interrogated.
