GUWAHATI: The 13th death anniversary of the legendary Assamese musician and cultural icon, Bhupen Hazarika, was observed with reverence in Guwahati on November 5. At a special programme organised by the Rotary Club of Guwahati, the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Award for 2024-25 was conferred upon renowned Assamese folk singer Snehalata Das.
The event, held at the Press Club in Guwahati, drew a gathering of Rotarians and members of the public, all united in their admiration for Bhupen Hazarika’s lasting impact on Assamese culture. The Rotary Club of Guwahati, chartered in 1955, has been honouring distinguished individuals with the award since 2020.
Snehalata Das, the latest recipient of the award, is a distinguished figure in the world of Assamese folk music. During the event, she delivered a speech about her journey into folk music and moved the audience with several of her melodious performances. The award, which comes with a citation and mementoes symbolising Assamese culture, was presented by notable Rotarians, including President Pranab Kumar Choudhury, Gautam Sarma, Ranjana Bora, S.R. Saikia, Bandana Dutta, and PDG P.K. Kedia.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Choudhury. Saikia gave the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of the organising team and attendees. The event was anchored by Rtn Sashanka Sekhar Dutta.
Bhupen Hazarika's influence on Assamese music, literature, and cinema remains unparalleled. His death anniversary is not only a day of remembrance, but also a celebration of the rich cultural traditions he championed throughout his life.
