B Borooah Cancer Institute to Remain Shut Today, Health Workers to be Tested for COVID-19

GUWAHATI: After fresh cases were reported in the city last night, in addition to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, the B Borooah Cancer Institute will remain shut today to ensure safety of its healthcare workers.

Of the cases tested positive last night, one was of the granddaughter of a healthcare worker from the city's Cancer Institute.  The institute will be shut for employees and staff who had come in contact with the health worker to contain the spread of the virus.

“Usually we treat patients with radiotherapy five days a week from Monday to Friday. So in any case treatment does not take place on Saturday and Sunday,” said Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, Director, B Borooah Cancer Institute, clarifying on the confusion that was going around as to the duration for which the institute will be shut.

"The institute is not going to provide clinical services today to protect their health workers because ultimately it is them who will have to treat all other patients later," said Dr. Kataki. “During this period today, the hospital will do contact testing and swab testing of all employees who may have come in contact with the health worker based on which we will take subsequent steps," he added.

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital was announced to remain closed for new patients until its sanitization in a tweet by state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier this morning.
