Auto Tippers Distributed to NGOs In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) organized a program for ceremonial distribution of auto tippers among NGOs working under the GMC on Saturday, June 5, with the aim of enhancing a better waste management system in the city.

The event was observed at the Janxala branch of GMC located near Basistha Chariali. It was attended by Assam Chief Minister (CM) Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Ashok Singhal, and other senior officers of GMC.

The Assam CM on the occasion of World Environment Day, 2021, began the program by planting saplings in the premises.

Auto tippers are extremely useful for transportation and waste/garbage collection from narrow lanes and individual houses to points of disposal. The operation of unloading i.e. tilting the container to its disposal point gives the device its name.

Guwahati currently has 90 NGOs operating across 31 wards in the city. Usually, one auto tipper is assigned per ward to transfer the garbage to the transfer stations from where they are carried to the dumping site.

Thereafter, the Assam CM ceremonially distributed 12 auto tippers to the NGOs engaged under GMC for garbage collection. These auto tippers shall be useful for better transportation and disposal of wastes from narrow lanes, individual houses etc. The program ended with flagging off of the auto tippers by the CM.

Dr Sarma further stated that 100 auto tippers would be distributed in the first phase to immensely boost the garbage disposal system in Guwahati.  He elaborated on the Assam government’s plans to manage artificial floods in the city in 2021.
