ASTC Faces Dilemma Over Utilisation Of Extensive Vacant Plots Across Assam

GUWAHATI: In light of recent development, ASTC currently stands at a crossroads as they are yet to figure out on maximizing the potential of their expansive vacant plots.

According to sources in the ASTC,  the department currently has a total of 740 bighas of land in various locations like Mangoldoi, Silchar, Dhubri, Bhutan, Sipajhar, and extending till Bhutan.

Talking to G Plus, an official from ASTC stated that the department is currently in a visible conundrum regarding how to utilise its plots. "We are thinking of several things but we are planning to take the route as per commercial viability and public convenience," the official said.

Amidst this deliberation, land monetization committees are yet to submit a comprehensive report to ASTC, shedding light on the possibilities for effectively utilising these vacant plots of land. The report is anticipated to outline innovative strategies that not only capitalise on the land's value but also align with ASTC's mission to enhance public services and transportation infrastructure.

Adding to this the ASTC is also building a CNG station in Ulubari that will cater not only to its fleet of CNG buses but also to the general public. This step toward sustainable fuel solutions underlines ASTC's commitment to environmentally-conscious initiatives.

The department also holds 120 bighas of Land in Rupnagar out of which a portion of it has already been allocated to institutions such as Cotton College and the Assam Police Department.

ASTC also finds itself grappling with decisions concerning the remaining 82 bighas of land in Rupnagar.

Another ASTC official mentioned that it was discussed that due to the allocation of the ASTC Paltan Bazaar plot to the Railway department, the central head office will undergo a temporary relocation to the Rupnagar plot. This arrangement will continue until a suitable permanent location for the new head office is identified.

However, the ASTC has several ideas on how to utilise this plot. As per an official from the department, the plan is to establish a range of workshops and facilities aimed at bolstering the maintenance and repair capabilities of its extensive fleet of buses.

"The department is planning to build a central workshop that will cater to ASTC buses from all corners of Assam. This workshop will focus on comprehensive maintenance and repair services, ensuring that these buses are kept in optimal working condition," the official further mentioned.

To cater to buses in need of minimal repairs, ASTC will also be introducing Divisional Workshops strategically placed all across Assam. These workshops will provide quick and efficient solutions for minor repairs, ensuring that ASTC buses can get back on the road promptly.
