GUWAHATI: Assam’s Commonwealth Championships gold-winning weightlifter Popy Hazarika has been placed under provisional suspension by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after failing dope tests.

Hazarika previously clinched gold in the 59kg category at the 2023 Commonwealth Championships in Noida. Her name was registered amongst more than 30 athletes across various sports in NADA’s latest list.
Athletes from disciplines such as athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, and powerlifting were included, though further details were not disclosed.
Among others suspended are National U-20 hammer throw champion Anshika Singh, Senior National Open 1500m bronze medallist Sunita, and National U-20 medal-winning sprinter Anusha Biswas. Notably, three minors were also named.
In weightlifting, notable names include Shyopat Singh, Avinash, and Khushi Kag, while the powerlifting category features athletes such as Mohan Kumar, Aditya Sharma, and Ruturaj Prakash. Wrestling also saw several suspensions, with athletes like Gaurav Kumar and Savita under scrutiny.
Athletics accounted for a large portion of the list, including hammer thrower Anshika Singh, sprinter Anusha Biswas, and long-distance runner Sunita. Other disciplines such as boxing, basketball, kabaddi, judo, and cycling also reported cases, with names like Shivendra Pandey (basketball) and Shankar Thapa (boxing) facing action.
