GUWAHATI: The Republic Day Parade in 2024 will feature Assam's tableau celebrating the bicentennial milestone of Assam tea.
A senior official from the Assam Cultural Department while speaking to GPlus said, "Since the Assam tea industry has completed 200 years, we have chosen the theme accordingly. The tea industry in Assam has helped us in our socioeconomic growth and cultural development. Moreover, our Assam government has also witnessed growth amongst the small tea growers so we thought of keeping this as our theme."
The Cultural Department official further mentioned, "Over 20 participants will be part of the event, with 11 on the trailer and 12 as dancers." Although the theme has received approval, it is currently in the model stage, according to the Cultural Department official.
While Assam tea is renowned for its robust and malty profile, appreciated for its rich taste, distinct colour, and flavour, it is crucial to acknowledge concerns regarding the industry's environmental and labour practices.
In the 2023 Republic Day parade, the Assam tableau featured the legendary Ahom general, Lachit Barphukan, who successfully defeated the Mughal army.
