Assam: West Bengal Police Exhumes Body Of IIT Kharagpur Student For Second Post-Mortem

GUWAHATI: A team of West Bengal Police officers on Tuesday successfully exhumed the body of Faizan Ahmed to conduct a second post-mortem after his family filed allegations of foul play being involved in his death.

Faizan was a student of IIT Kharagpur and a resident of Assam’s Tinsukia. He was found dead under mysterious circumstances within the college’s hotel premises on October 2022.

The body was exhumed from a burial ground in Dibrugarh on Tuesday morning.

The investigating team, consisting of Inspector Biswaranjan Banerjee, Manoj Kumar Singh, Prasanta Burman, and Purushuttam Pandey from Kharagpur, arrived in Dibrugarh on Monday.

After Faizan’s body was found in his hostel room, the IIT administration had initially stated that the student died by suicide.

However, Faizan’s family consistently claimed that he was a victim of foul play, and demanded a thorough investigation.

Acting upon their allegations, Faizan’s parents filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court, seeking justice for their son and demanding a thorough investigation into his death.

Following an order issued by the Calcutta High Court, the team of West Bengal Police conducted the exhumation of Faizan’s body.

The court deemed it necessary to perform a second post-mortem at the Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta to determine whether Faizan's death was a result of suicide or not.

The West Bengal Police team had obtained permission from the Dibrugarh district and sessions court for the exhumation of Faizan’s body.

A forensics team was also reportedly present at the burial ground as the body was exhumed on Tuesday.

The body is now being taken to Kolkata for the second post-mortem examination.
