Assam: Voting on for the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) Elections; BJP Eyes Council

GUWAHATI: Voting is on for the 36-member Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) elections in Morigaon district of Assam as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after a good performance in the Bodoland elections, is now eyeing to win big here as well.

More than 1.43 lakh voters are likely to exercise their franchise throughout the day today in this 2nd phase of the TAC elections.


A total of 124 candidates are in the fray in the council election and a total of 3,08,409 voters will decide the fate of the candidates in ballot papers.


According to the Assam State Election Commission, polling will take place from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm in as many as 410 polling booths.


The BJP is contesting in 35 council seats while its ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is contesting in one seat. The counting of votes will be held on December 19.


Notably, of the total 19 constituencies in Morigaon district which have gone to polls today, December 17 BJP’s Moni Ram Pator has already been elected to the Council unopposed. Voting for the remaining 18 seats in the Morigaon district is underway.


Voting is underway in 187 polling stations across the district maintaining COVID-19 protocols.


Of the total 187 polling stations, 119 have been earmarked as sensitive.


To ensure hassle-free and fair elections, as many as 5 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the district.


Notably, as a precautionary measure, the Kamrup-Metro district administration had already declared Thursday, December 17 as a ‘dry day’ in certain parts of the district, prohibiting the sale, consumption, and possession of liquor.
