GUWAHATI: Amid a concerted drive to boost revenue collections in Assam, government offices in Teok town of Jorhat district have been served notices amounting to crores of rupees in unpaid power bills.
Total unpaid dues under Teok Electric Zone are estimated to be over Rs 1.5 crores.
The Public Health Department of Teok has the maximum amount due which is approximately Rs 72 lakh. The Irrigation Department has outstanding dues of over Rs 20 lakh, and Teok Municipality’s power dues are Rs 61,000. A total of Rs 15 lakh rupees worth of power dues are owed from other government offices in the region.
The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has taken up extensive measures to turn the loss-incurring power sector of the region into a profitable venture.
Meanwhile, Assam Power Minister Bimal Bora has taken measures including revenue collection drives.
The APDCL has served 'Kutir Jyoti Yojana' bills worth Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month. The scheme is connected to below poverty line (BPL) households under the Teok Sub-Zone and has evoked protests from local residents.
