Assam Tribal Council Unveils Vision Document For 26 Communities

GUWAHATI: A new vision document outlining the future development of Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) was released by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Monday, December 30. The document acknowledges the contributions of 26 ethnic communities, including the Odias, Hajongs, Kurukhs, and Scheduled Castes such as the Hiras and Patnis, aims to provide these groups with the recognition they have long been denied. The BTR, with its 31.55 lakh inhabitants spread over five districts, has been marked by ethnic and communal strife.

Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), described the document as a "New Year gift" for these communities, highlighting their vital role in maintaining peace in the region. The project, conceived over six months ago, included consultations with community representatives to address their concerns and aspirations. The document categorises these demands into three categories: those within the Council’s reach, those that require State intervention, and those that need Central government support.

Boro, involved in social activism and the Bodo statehood movement, believes that this initiative will help to bring lasting peace to a region plagued by past conflicts. The document seeks to protect cultural identities, promote sustainable peace, and address issues such as land rights and constitutional recognition for the communities involved.
