Assam told to Free Non-Muslims from Detention Camps: MoS Nityanand Rai

GUWAHATI: Union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai, told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the Assam government has been advised to release all non-Muslims from Bangladesh and Pakistan “who have been forced to seek shelter in the state before December 31, 2014, with expired or without valid documents” from the detention centres.

He further added that the detention centres will now be called holding centres.

Rai was replying to a query by Congress MP from Assam Abdul Khaleque on whether the government has taken any initiative to release the declared foreigners belonging to the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, Christian and Jain communities who are residing in detention camps.

To this, Rai replied that no specific instruction has been issued by the central government regarding the release of such migrants from detention centres after enactment of the CAA.
