GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on December 10, the forthcoming implementation of a law aimed at regulating land purchases in specific regions in the state.

The legislation is designed to ensure that only individuals of Assamese origin can acquire land in designated areas such as Majuli, Batadrava, and Barpeta, with a focus on fostering a shared sense of identity.

Speaking at the Swahid Divas program held at Swahid Smarak Khetra, Pachim Boragaon, Sarma talked about the significance of preserving Assamese culture. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts from both the government and the community to actively contribute to this preservation.

In his address, Sarma expressed concerns about instances where Assamese government employees, particularly in the revenue and forest departments, facilitated outsiders in purchasing and occupying land. The Chief Minister asserted that the upcoming law seeks to put an end to such practices, ensuring the protection of the interests of Assam and its people.

During his speech, Sarma said, "We should collectively progress as Assamese individuals, with both government and community initiatives working towards safeguarding Assamese culture."

Highlighting specific cases in Garukhuti, Kaziranga, and Batadrava, Sarma pointed out instances where Assamese government employees, particularly in the revenue department, were found to be acting against the interests of the state, compromising the cultural integrity of Assam.

The Chief Minister urged all Assamese individuals, both within the government and at the community level, to unite to protect the cultural heritage of the state. He emphasised the importance of a firm stance against outsiders purchasing land and establishing businesses in these culturally significant areas.
