GUWAHATI: The Assam government has announced a series of initiatives to enhance self-sufficiency in egg, fish, and pork production, with financial allocations to support these sectors. The government will introduce a Pure-line Pig Breeding Programme alongside a Pig Artificial Insemination (AI) Mission. Assam will import Canadian pig breeds for genetic upgradation of the local pig population. A budget of ₹11 crore has been set aside for this initiative.

Making the announcement in her budget speech on Monday, March 10 Finance Minister Ajanta Neog further said the state has earmarked ₹24 crore to boost egg production and implement the policy for commercialisation of the poultry sector. This initiative aims to strengthen the poultry industry and reduce dependency on external sources for eggs.
The government will also constitute a committee to explore further measures to achieve self-sufficiency in fish, fish feed, pork, and egg production.
Furthermore, three pet care hospitals are set to become operational in Guwahati, Bokakhat, and Dibrugarh by October 2025. Additionally, four multi-care veterinary hospitals are under construction in Kamrup, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, and Tinsukia, while a fifth hospital is being developed in Sivasagar. A total of ₹24 crore has been allocated for these healthcare facilities.
