GUWAHATI: Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden have achieved new heights in in-house breeding.
After successfully breeding a pair of Greater Adjutant Storks, the zoo’s first Himalayan Serow was born on 15 January.
Assam State Zoo, Guwahati along with the Nagaland Zoological Park, Dimapur undertook an exemplary step to conserve the Himalayan Serow - an endangered species.
The Assam State Zoo which is the coordinating zoo for conservation breeding of serow had only two female serow and the Nagaland Zoo had only one male.
Both Zoos discussed the matter and the Nagaland zoo sent it’s male serrow to Assam for breeding. The programme was approved by the Central Zoo Authority in New Delhi.
At the Assam State Zoo, the male and female was carefully paired within 10 months of arrival of the male. And on 15 Jan the first calf was born.
Divisional Forest Officer of Assam State Zoo Tejas Mariswamy said, “It’s very special for both zoos and the conservation of serow.”
This is for the first time animals have been exchanged on breeding loan and have done so successfully.
