Goswami was first accused by U.S. federal prosecutors of manipulating data to falsely secure carbon credits worth over $250 million. The allegations stem from his work as the head of carbon and sustainability accounting at CQC Impact Investors, a company specialising in generating voluntary carbon credits.

However, Goswami has reportedly denied any wrongdoing, explaining that his responsibilities at the company were strictly limited to technical work. “I just heard from the media… I don’t have any legal notice till now from any authority,” he reportedly told news outlets. “I don’t have any legal notice till now from any authority.”

Goswami further distanced himself from the allegations, claiming zero involvement in the scheme. He also stressed that his duties were solely related to “technical” tasks, and had made no kind of “financial dealings” with anyone.

Goswami, who holds a Master’s in Chemistry from Gauhati University and a Master’s in Energy Technology from Tezpur University, had built a reputation for his work in hydrogen energy research at the Central Electrochemical Research Institute in India. His expertise later led him to work in the U.S. carbon credit sector, where the alleged fraud took place.

The case has garnered attention both in India and abroad, particularly due to the growing scrutiny of the carbon credit market, which is crucial for global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
