Assam: Road Traffic Accidents Significantly Low Due to Subdued Durga Puja Celebrations

GUWAHATI: A positive aspect of the low-key Durga puja this year was the low number of road traffic accidents that were recorded both by the Guwahati Traffic Police and the Mrityunjay 108 ambulance service.

From 21st to the 26th of October, Guwahati Traffic Police registered a total of 17 road traffic accidents. Of these, 3 were fatal cases resulting in the death of 3 persons and the remaining 14 were non-fatal cases. 12 people were reported injured. Majority of the cases were under Jalukbari Police Station and Jalukbari Outpost, with 2 deaths and 7 injured.

As per data provided by Mrityunjay 108 service, this year only 4 cases were reported from 23rd to 26th of October, during the days of the Durga Puja celebrations in Guwahati, which is significantly less than the 28  number of incidents reported last year during puja.

Mrityunjay provided its services to a total of 301 cases across Assam during this period. Last year the number was 472.

Sonitpur district reported the highest number of road traffic accidents with 39 cases, 18 of these on Dashami alone. It was followed by Kamrup (Rural) with 32 accidents and Nagoan with 21. Notably, most accidents occurred on the day of idol immersion, i.e. on 26th October.
