GUWAHATI: 11 members from the Producers’ Council, an association of producers from film and television programmes submitted a memorandum demanding the launch of a ‘DD Assam’ 24x7 channel.

The Producers’ Council expressed deep anguish and referred that even after 33 years of existence of the DDK in Guwahati since March 24, 1985, the channel has still not been updated to a 24x7 ‘DD Assam’ channel. This decision has been long-pending and a legitimate aspiration and demand of the people of Assam, according to a press release.

It was also argued before the Director General that no extra burden would have to be put on its exchequer to start the ‘DD Assam’ 24x7 channel. The channel can me made by merging the PPC (NE) with DDK, Guwahati within the existing infrastructure including machinery and human resources. The only additional requirements would be that of one programme head and one engineer, which can be obtained either by appointment or deputation.

The delegation informed the DG that the Producers’ Council and 18 other organizations of Assam including the Asam Sahitya Sabha and Bodo Sahitya Sabha have made a number of deliberations and memorandums to the Prime Minister of India, the Governor of Assam, the Chief Minister of Assam and the Union I&B Minister on the matter. The Chief Minister even took the matter seriously and requested the Chairman of Prasar Bharati to do the needful but no steps have been taken so far.
