GUWAHATI: The Lead Agency on Road Safety, operating under the Transport Department, Assam, handed over 10 state-of-the-art traffic interceptor vehicles and 150 breath analysers to the Assam Police on December 22.
The official equipment handover ceremony took place today at the Assam Police Headquarters.
Minister of Transport, Parimal Suklabaidya presented the advanced tools to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, IPS. Senior officials from both the Transport Department and Assam Police were also present at the ceremony.
This initiative also aligns with the approaching festive season and challenging weather conditions, particularly foggy winters in many areas. The 10 traffic interceptor vehicles, equipped with advanced monitoring and enforcement tools, will be strategically distributed across Assam, focusing on accident-prone areas. The deployment of these vehicles aims to enhance surveillance and deter traffic violations, especially over-speeding, which is identified as the leading cause of accidents and fatalities in Assam.
During the ceremony, the DGP also emphasised that two Traffic Interceptor Vehicles (TIVs) would be exclusively allocated to the Nagaon and Golaghat districts for deployment in Kaziranga National Park. This deployment aims to curb the menace of over-speeding in that specific segment. Additionally, the breath analysers provided will play a crucial role in intensifying enforcement efforts against incidents of Drink and Drive, an issue where Assam registers more cases than the national average.
As the festive season approaches, the initiative is designed to reduce incidents of over-speeding and Drink and Drive, contributing to the overall reduction of accidents and fatalities in the state.
