Speaking to the press after a cabinet meeting on Friday, April 4, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state is preparing to appoint 10 to 15 young people in each flood-prone area to oversee the condition of embankments between April and October. Each youth will be given the responsibility to monitor an 8 to 10 kilometre stretch—checking for signs of water seepage, cracks, or damage that could lead to a breach.
“These embankments are old, and water keeps finding its way in. That’s why we have decided to involve the youth directly for keeping watch,” said the chief minister. “They will be our eyes and ears on the ground for immediate information of breach," he said adding this would be voluntary work in nature. The youths will be given various aids like raincoats, torches, and geobags etc to help tackle any breach in embankments immediately. The youths will be felicitated after October.
