The swimming events of the seventh edition of the Khelo India Youth Games commenced today on Monday, May 5, in the city of Gaya. Representing Assam in the boys’ 50m butterfly, Jononjoy Jyoti Hazarika topped the qualification round in the morning and lived up to expectations in the final held in the evening. Clocking an impressive 24.98 seconds, Hazarika secured the gold and brought early glory to Assam’s contingent.

This is Jononjoy’s second consecutive gold medal at the Khelo India Youth Games. Last year, at the sixth edition held in Chennai, he had claimed gold in the boys’ 100m butterfly with a time of 55.56 seconds. However, this is his first gold in the 50m butterfly event. Notably, he had won silver in the same event at the 2023 Games held in Madhya Pradesh. With medals in three consecutive editions, Jononjoy continues to be a standout performer for Assam.

Meanwhile, Subhranshwini Priyadarshini added another medal to Assam’s tally by finishing third in the girls’ 200m freestyle, clocking a time of 2 minutes and 12.78 seconds. She had earlier secured a bronze in the 50m butterfly at the sixth edition in Tamil Nadu. More recently, she won silver in the women’s 800m freestyle at the National Games held in Uttarakhand earlier this year, with a timing of 9:28.45.

Alongside swimming achievements, Assam also progressed to the quarter-finals in the Gatka competition, keeping hopes alive for more medals in the days ahead.
