Assam: New Decreased Rates To Be Levied On Alcohol From September 1

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has announced revised ad valorem taxes on rates of beer and Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), such as Regular, Luxury and Elegant brands, which will take effect from Sunday, September 1. These revised rates were announced as per a notification on Friday, August 30.

These new rates were officially published in the Assam Gazette on August 19. This price adjustment comes after a hike in March, which was intended to increase state revenue, given the significant role of alcohol taxes in Assam’s financial structure. In the statement, the Department detailed the updated tax framework, which introduces varying ad-valorem levies and adjusted minimum price thresholds based on the type and cost of alcohol.

The price cut is speculated to be an intelligent move ahead of the festive season and in response to a decline in alcohol sales following the previous price hike.

In response, the government directed all brand owners and manufacturers to submit updated cost cards reflecting the new rates by August 22, 2024.

Following these submissions, the government has now finalised the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for the most popular brands, effective from Sunday, September 1.
