GUWAHATI: The Assam Muslim Autonomous Council Demand Committee has called for a state-wide bandh on May 8. This comes at a time when the Gauhati High Court has issued a blanket ban on bandhs.

Some of the reasons that the organisation mentioned for calling the bandh include the Biswanath beef incident where a beef seller was beaten up and made to eat pork, unwarranted statements by legislator Prasanta Phukan and the various inflammatory comments made by BJP legislator of Hojai, Shiladitya Dev.

Addressing a press conference on May 6 in Dispur Press Club, Rashidul Hoque Bahadur, former legislator and president of the organisation claimed that he and his organisation believe that RSS and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were involved in the heinous Biswanath incident.

Bahadur also said that he is afraid that the BJP will unleash a reign of terror over the Muslim population if the party does not perform well in the parliamentary elections.

Bahadur has urged the state government to take serious note of this issue.
