GUWAHATI: A massive protest rally was held on Tuesday at Haflong in Assam's Dima Hasao district to denounce the appalling attack on tribal women in Manipur that occurred on May 4.
The rally, organised by the Dima Hasao Joint Women's Organisation, saw widespread participation from various communities in the region.
Protesters took to the main streets, marching from Lalfield to Synod Rotary and Council Rotary before converging in front of the DC office. During the demonstration, a memorandum was submitted to the President, Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, through the DC's office. Copies of the memorandum were also handed over to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the DC.
The demonstrators expressed deep shock, sorrow, and anger over the heinous incident in Manipur, where two tribal women were subjected to public humiliation, gang rape, and a brutal assault by a mob. Tragically, the teenage brother of one of the victims lost his life while bravely trying to protect his sister.
The rally shed light on the prevailing existential angst faced by women in Manipur and the nation due to the ongoing conflict.
The Dima Hasao Joint Women's Organisation emphasised that such cases often go unreported, and even when reported, the authorities rarely take appropriate actions against the perpetrators.
Condemning the act, the organisation demanded immediate action from the Central and State governments, the National Commissioner for Women, and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes against the offenders.
