Assam: Justice BD Agarwal Submits Report On 2021 Garukhuti Police Firing

 

GUWAHATI: The One Man Inquiry Commission, headed by Justice (Retd.) B.D. Agarwal, to investigate the circumstances that had led to police firing during an eviction drive in Darrang district leaving two persons dead on September 23, 2021, submitted its report to the government on Monday, October 21.

This eviction drive was carried out at Garukhuti in the Dhalpur area under Sipajhar Revenue Circle.

The report runs into 319 pages and includes 16 key recommendations. As part of the proceedings, the Commission received 55 memorandums and cross-examined 44 witnesses.

Justice B D Agarwal submitted the findings of the report to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, Additional Chief Secretary of Home and Political Department A.K. Tiwari, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister K.K. Dwivedi, and a host of other officials were also present.

According to reports, police had to retort with open fire after residents of Garukhuti allegedly turned violent while opposing the eviction. A 12-year-old boy was among the two persons killed in the firing.

The incident had become infamous further after clips of a photographer jumping on a body became viral online.
