GUWAHATI: A journalist in Silchar, Assam made allegations that he was beaten up by a home guard in a government hospital on Saturday night, November 12.
Talking to the media, the journalist, Biswa Kalyan Purkayastha, said the incident took place at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) when he went to give food to his sister-in-law who had delivered a baby on November 11.
According to media reports, at around 11:20 PM on November 12, Saturday, the journalist went to SMCH where a few men in uniform were seen misbehaving with people. When he requested them to behave properly, one of them attacked him with a stick.
The journalist claimed he sustained severe injuries in the assault and filed an FIR at the Silchar Sadar Police Station on Sunday, November 13.
Media reported that Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta, who met Purkayastha in the hospital on Saturday, said that the police had instructions from the Chief Minister to provide adequate security to the journalist. “We are taking proper steps so that these kinds of incidents never happen again,” the SP was quoted by the media.
Police informed that the accused home guard, S Deb, has been suspended and detained for interrogation. The police are investigating the matter and appropriate actions will be taken against him, police claimed.
A resident of Silchar talking to G Plus said, “The SMCH security personnel always misbehave with attendants. This time it was a journalist, therefore the issue is reported.”
