Assam: IIT Guwahati, Brahmaputra Board To Join Hands For Efficient Utilisation Of The River

GUWAHATI: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) will be collaborating with the Brahmaputra Board to address issues related to the Brahmaputra river and better utilisation of the water resource for the benefit of the people. The collaboration is expected to evolve with innovative technology, which will help in better management of the river.

An MoU on the collaboration was signed by Director of IIT Guwahati Prof TG Sitharam and Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board Rajiv Yadav on Friday, July 30. The partnership will initiate experimentational and computational study, and promote academic visits of students and officials for the mutual benefit of stakeholders.

The MoU between IIT G and the North-Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Institute (NEHARI) under the Brahmaputra Board is aimed to create a synergy in the field of research and allied activities relating to basin, flood, and riverbank management.

Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, Arup Kumar Sarma informed that IIT G had recently developed its indigenous river model BRAHMA (Braided River Aid:Hydro-Morphological Analyzer) through a collaborative project with the Brahmaputra Board, and this MoU will facilitate the model’s speedy field implementation.

Highlighting the unique aspects of this collaboration, the Director of IITG said, “Management of a complex river like the Brahmaputra is possible only through a collaborative approach of academia and industry, and this is a step towards that”.

The Chairman of Brahmaputra Board Rajiv Yadav, IAS (RTD), highlighted, “North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Institute (NEHARI) under Brahmaputra Board is the second laboratory of the country, after Central Water and Power Research Station(CWPRS) of Pune, to have updated hydrological laboratories on model studies spanning over an area of about 44-hectare land.”
