GUWAHATI: A 32-year-old IAS officer in Assam's North Salmara, Megh Nidhi Dahal, has implemented a zero plastic policy in his work place at a government office.
Dahal, who is the sub-divisional officer (SDO) cum district election officer of North Salmara, Assam, has been promoting a no-plastic environment in government offices by replacing plastic or paper cups with earthen cups for three years now.
During office meetings or for everyday use, people only use reusable plates and earthen pots in an effort to preserve the environment.

His efforts to create a zero-plastic workspace is not limited to his work premises. He and his team ensure that no plastic product is used for large-scale events organised by them as well.
For example, this year, during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Dahal organised a plastic-free event in a total of 484 polling stations which included the task of feeding 4000 to 5000 people.
For the event, Dahal replaced plastic and thermocol plates with 1200 reusable melamine plates and in place of thermocol bowls, they used corn starch bowls which are completely biodegradable.
Also, in the recently concluded Yoga Day celebrations, Dahal and his team conducted another plastic-free event by using glass tumblers and stainless steel jars instead of pet bottles.
Dahal believes that as responsible human beings, we should take care of our environment before it is too late.
