GUWAHATI: Cyber fraudsters have tried to scam people by disguising as the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Hojai, Anupam Choudhury on WhatsApp. The tricksters were asking people for money on WhatsApp by faking the identity of the Hojai DC on phone.
According to reports, a text was sent from a number+917718704137 to various people saying that the DC was currently attending a meeting and wanted the other person to collect the Amazon Pay e-gift cards on his behalf that he would pay back later.
The text message also had a link, where one could easily forward some Amazon Pay e-gift cards with Rs 10,000 value on each card. The fraudsters are yet to be traced.
Similar incidents have been reported from Assam where messages were sent to several top officials of the Government, asking money. Such messages were also sent in the name of Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta in April 2022 demanding money.
In July, Assam Industry Minister Bimal Bora had lodged an FIR after WhatsApp messages were sent using his image and name to various government officers trying to dupe money from them.
