GUWAHATI: In a recent move to bolster the state's renewable power capacity, the Assam Cabinet has approved the implementation of the 24-Megawatt Karbi Langpi Middle-II Hydro Power Project. The revised project cost is estimated at ₹417.32 crore.

The introduction of this hydro power project aims to address power shortages in the state and contribute to bridging the gap between electricity demand and supply, primarily through the utilisation of renewable energy sources. Moreover, the project is expected to create employment opportunities for approximately 150 individuals during the construction phase, and it will continue to generate jobs for around 44 people during its operational phase.

What sets this project apart is its classification as a "small hydro" facility, falling under the category of projects with a capacity below 25 MW. This distinction, coupled with its "run-of-the-river" design, ensures a significantly reduced environmental impact, minimising harm to the local ecology.

The move is a crucial step in Assam's journey towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
