Assam Govt to Shut Down Madrasas, Sanskrit Tols

GUWAHATI: The Assam government will shut down all government-run Madrasas as well as Sanskrit Tols.

Speaking during a programme at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Wednesday February 12, state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government Madrasas and Sanskrit Schools will be upgraded and converted to High schools and Higher Secondary schools.

He added that this in an initiative to modernise the Madrasas, High Madrasas and Sanskrit tols in the state.

“It is not the state government’s work to teach religious texts. We will shut down all government Madrasas and Sanskrit tols within the next 3-4 months,” said Sarma.   

He added that if someone wants to teach religious texts privately using their own money, they are free to do so. But if the public money to teach certain selected religious texts, then the students should be taught the Bhagavat Gita and the Bible as well, mentioned the minister.
