Assam Govt Grants Rs 2 Lakh for those Hurt during Assam Agitation

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented citations and a one-time financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakh each to 268 victims and their next of kin who suffered bullet injuries during the historic Assam Movement in Guwahati.

People irrespective of caste, creed, language and religion had joined the movement in which several lives were lost and many sustained permanent injuries.

Remembering the sacrifices of martyrs and victims of the Assam Movement, the CM said that government has taken steps like land boundary agreement, smart fencing along the border and NRC upgradation and implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord to protect interests of  indigenous people of Assam.

The Assam Movement or Assam Agitation (1979-1985) was a popular movement against illegal immigrants in Assam.
