The decision was taken at the state cabinet on Friday, April 4.

Speaking to the press after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that nearly 28,000 cases are currently pending in the Foreigners Tribunals across the state. Many of these involve people whose surnames are commonly found among the Koch-Rajbongshi population. These individuals have had to fight legal battles to prove their Indian citizenship, in some cases for years.

The state government now plans to remove the D-Voter tag from those affected, he said.
