Assam Government approves to waive off loans for farmers worth Rs. 600 crores

GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Tuesday, December 18 waived off loans of farmers worth Rs. 600 crores, months before the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. 

It is to be mentioned that this waiver will benefit approximately eight lakh farmers. 

Chandra Mohan Patowary, Assam Government Spokesperson and Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that according to their scheme, 25 percent loans will be written off by the government for farmers and upto a maximum of Rs. 25,000 of all farm debts. The waiver applies to all loans taken from PSU banks and through the Kisan Credit Card (KCC).

On December 17, the government, at a cabinet meeting also approved an interest relief scheme which will authorize around 19 lakh farmers to apply for loans at zero interest from the next fiscal year. In keeping with this news, the state Freedom Fighters’ pension will also be increased from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 21,000. The setup of a Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council was also okayed. 

This news comes after the BJP-led government in Gujarat announced its decision to waive off electricity bills of connection holders in rural areas.
