Assam Floods: 127 Animal Deaths Reported, 90% Area of Kaziranga National Park Submerged

GUWAHATI: Floods this year have wreaked havoc on the state of Assam causing damage to both property and life including that of wildlife. 

So far, 127 animals have died in Kaziranga National Park alone as per the Assam government’s latest report.

Of the total animal deaths this flood season, 68 animals have died by drowning while others died of other causes in the National Park, 90 percent of which is currently submerged in floodwaters.

13 Rhinos, 5 Wild Buffaloes, 8 Wild Boars, 2 Swamp Deers, 94 Hog Deers, 1 Sambar, 3 Porcupine, and 1 Python died this year.

Further, 157 animals have been rescued in this flood season of which 58 were injured due to floods, and 1 was hit by a vehicle. 

Among those injured were 2 Rhinos, 1 Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo, Swamp Deer, King Cobra, Bengal Frolican, Yellow Footed Green Pigeon, and a Lesser Adjutant Stork.

In addition to these, 118 Hog Deers, 4 Tigers, 22 Pythons, and 4 turtles were also rescued from the wrath of floods.

The water level of the Brahmaputra in Nimatighat, Numaligarh, Dhansirimukh, and Tezpur is still well above the danger mark. 

However, water at Pasighat and Dibrugarh is flowing below the danger mark.

Out of the 223 total camps set up in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, 106 are currently inundated by floodwaters. 5 camps have been vacated due to floods.
