Assam: Ferry Develops Minor Technical Snag On Way To Majuli, Passengers Rescued

 

GUWAHATI: A disaster was averted in Majuli in the wee hours of Saturday as a ferry carrying passengers developed a technical snag with water entering the boat.

The incident took place as the ferry, named SB Senimai, was crossing the Brahmaputra carrying passengers from Nimati Ghat on the Jorhat side to Aphalamukh ghat in Majuli.

According to reports, the issue was discovered during the early morning trip at around 7:30 AM, as a result of which a commotion broke out among the anxious passengers on the ferry.

However, rescue operations were immediately initiated, and another ferry was deployed to evacuate all passengers safely from the sinking ferry. 

Talking to GPlus, Inland Water Transport (IWT) Executive Engineer Ashim Baruah said, “It was a minor technical snag on the account of the jute coming out from the shaft bushing, which caused the water to temporarily enter. It was then resolved immediately as it does happen occasionally.”


Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, and we await further details.
