Assam Excise Department Officer Arrested For Accepting Bribe In Guwahati

 

GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, arrested Partha Hazarika, a Section Officer of the Excise Department, for accepting a bribe of ₹24,500. The arrest was made on Wednesday, October 16, as the team had laid a trap near the main gate of Janata Bhawan, Dispur, Guwahati, following a complaint.

According to the Directorate, the complainant approached them after Hazarika allegedly demanded ₹1,00,000 as a bribe in connection with the sanction of a liquor shop licence (NFL ON shop). Unwilling to pay the amount, the complainant sought legal action, leading to the sting operation.

At around 11:30 AM, Hazarika was caught red-handed accepting ₹24,500 from the complainant. The money was recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses and seized by officials.

Following sufficient evidence, Hazarika was arrested and a case has been registered at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Police Station under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), vide case number 77/2024. 

The Directorate has assured that necessary legal follow-up actions are underway.
