Assam: Elephant Dies Of Suspected Poisoning At Udalguri

GUWAHATI: A 30-year-old wild elephant (makhna) died of suspected food poisoning at Chaglijhar near Hatigarh in the Udalguri district of Assam on Wednesday, October 27.

Makhna is an Indian word for a tusk-less bull elephant.

The elephant was found dead in a paddy field. At first, it was considered to be a case of electrocution. However, the post mortem report has stated that the death was caused due to food poisoning.

G Plus spoke to Dr Sulabh Sharma, who conducted the post mortem. "We have found it to be the case of poisoning, but as per protocols we have forwarded our tentative findings to the forensics, who will finally examine and decide," Dr Sarma told G Plus.

Elephant deaths have come to the forefront in Assam with the deaths of two elephants from electrocution in the same week at Guwahati and Kaziranga.
