GUWAHATI: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has turned out to be the surprise package of the Assam Assembly elections, winning one seat and leading in seven others out of the 12 seats which were up for grabs in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
The win has almost wiped out the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) led by Hagrama Mohilary. The BPF which fell out with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Congress-led Mahajot is leading in a single seat from Majbat represented by Charan Boro who is leading over his nearest rival Jitu Kissan of the BJP.
UPPL leader Pramod Boro said he was thankful that people reposed faith in his party which had earlier made a mark in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections when it teamed with the BJP to win the major seats and form the government. However, not many were willing to give the UPPL a chance in the Assembly elections.
The UPPL leader said he was grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership which he said will provide the right impetus for the development of the BTR.
Besides the UPPL, the BJP has secured the Panery constituency seat with Biswajit Daimary winning over his nearest rival Karuna Kanta Swargiary of the BPF. The party is leading in two other seats, that is, Bijni and Kaliagaon.
