GUWAHATI: The Director General of Police (DGP) Assam, GP Singh, has expressed sorrow upon learning about the recent suicide of a young resident from Dergaon in Golaghat District and has directed the Superintendent of Police in Golaghat to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances leading to the tragedy on Wednesday.

The investigation aims to establish responsibility for the incident and to take appropriate legal action in accordance with the law.

In a statement shared on the X platform, DGP Singh conveyed, "Assam Police is deeply disheartened by the news of the suicide of our young fellow citizen, Ajay Dutta, from Dergaon in Golaghat District. The Chief Minister of Assam has expressed his profound concern about this incident."

The event unfolded on the night of Vijaya Dashami, marking the end of the Navaratri festivities. The incident was reported in Dolormukh village in Dergaon, where the individual identified as Ajay Dutta took his own life.

According to a police complaint filed by the deceased's family, the young man had gone out to witness the Vijaya Dashami celebrations when a verbal altercation ensued between one Rahul Dutta and a truck driver.

Subsequently, the driver, along with a traffic constable, allegedly assaulted Ajay while he was trying to intervene and protect the other youth involved in the dispute. The complaint lodged with the Dergaon police station detailed the distressing encounter.

A video of the incident, featuring the young man explaining his side of the argument, has since gone viral on social media. In the video, the young individual expressed that the encounter had caused him considerable distress, leading to his decision to take his own life. He stated, "I tried to save the youth when the driver punched me in my face. One traffic constable also thrashed me with his stick. I was innocent, I did nothing but only tried to save a youth who was involved in a fight with the driver."
