Assam Deported Over 30,000 Foreigners Till January 2024, Says Atul Bora

GUWAHATI: In a recent update in the State Assembly, Cabinet Minister Atul Bora, disclosed that Assam has deported a total of 30,101 foreigners by January 31, 2024 in accordance with the Assam Accord. 

Responding to queries posed by MLA Aminul Islam (Jr), Bora revealed that as of December 2023, 1,59,353 individuals had been identified as foreigners in Assam under the accord's provisions.

MLA Islam had specifically inquired about the number of illegal Bangladeshi nationals identified and deported by the state government, as well as discussions with the Centre regarding individuals held in detention camps and the status of constitutional safeguards for Assamese as per Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. In response, Bora stated that as of January this year, 203 individuals had been detained at transit camps.

Additionally, he informed the assembly that the Assam government has formed a sub-committee to address Clause 6 and is currently studying and reviewing all clauses, including Clause 6. The sub-committee has already convened five times for discussions, with further actions to be determined upon completion of thorough study and review.

Bora also emphasised that there is yet to be a definitive determination on who qualifies as indigenous residents of Assam. Furthermore, he noted that the definition of "Assamese" as outlined in the Assam Accord remains undefined at present.
