Sarma warned that the dam could cause severe ecological and economic repercussions for the Northeast
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma raised serious concerns on Monday, January 6, over China’s proposed construction of the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River.

Speaking at a press conference held after the roadshow in Mumbai, Sarma warned that the dam could cause severe ecological and economic repercussions for the Northeast.
“If the dam construction starts in China, the entire ecosystem that thrives on the Brahmaputra will be reduced by 60%,” the chief minister stated. “This is going to be disastrous for the entire northeastern region.”
Although a detailed assessment is pending, preliminary reports have suggested catastrophic outcomes for the region. “The initial report that we have stated that it is very disastrous and devastating," Sarma added.
The chief minister also used the roadshow to highlight Assam’s industrial ambitions, inviting investment for the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, to be held on February 25 and 26.
