Assam CM Seeks PM Modi's Support For Classical Language Status For Assamese

The status would bring the language alongside other Indian languages with rich cultural histories, further elevating Assam’s position in the country’s linguistic heritage

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called for the recognition of Assamese as a classical language on Tuesday, October 1, as the State government continues to engage in discussions with the central government on the matter.

In a post on X, Sarma highlighted the cultural significance of this initiative for Assam and its heritage. "I am sure that Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give serious consideration to our request," he wrote in Assamese.

Sarma also went on to emphasise that the push for classical status goes beyond the recommendations of the Justice Biplab Sharma Committee report. He states that this recognition would solidify Assamese's place within India’s diverse linguistic landscape, giving it prominence at both national and global levels.

The chief minister noted that classical status would uplift the language’s presence in educational, cultural, and literary fields, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
