GUWAHATI: The lifeless body of a rhinoceros was discovered on Tuesday morning in Assam's Morigaon, inside the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary as per reports.
A preliminary investigation conducted by the Forest Department suggests that the rhino likely perished as a result of drowning.
The carcass of the unfortunate rhino was found in the vicinity of the Haduk Hanging Bridge, situated within the confines of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. Promptly, officials from the forest department arrived at the scene and successfully recovered the rhino's lifeless body.
Talking to G Plus a Forest Official confirmed, “The death is suspected to have been due to the extreme floods in the region which resulted in the inundation of the female rhino. We are going to send the carcass for a thorough post-mortem to determine the exact cause of its death after following the due departmental proceedings of removing the horn. Post this a proper burial will be given.”
Additionally, it is to be noted that a significant portion of the wildlife sanctuary, approximately 70 per cent, had been inundated by floodwaters due to the rising levels of the Brahmaputra River.
This inundation event likely contributed to the unfortunate demise of the rhino, emphasising the ongoing challenges faced by the sanctuary's wildlife in the wake of such natural disasters.
