Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has formally approved the construction of another bridge on the Brahmaputra, this one connecting Palashbari and Sualkuchi.
The approval, under the Assam Bridge Project-II, was given today, May 3, during the weekly Cabinet meeting.
The four lane ‘extradosed prestressed concrete’ (PSC) bridge, when completed, will shorten the distance between the LGBI Airport in Guwahati and lower Assam districts by 26 kms. The bridge will de-congest traffic in Guwahati and ensure seamless connectivity to the Sualkuchi and Amingaon areas from the LGBI airport.
The total length of the Palashbari-Sualkuchi Brahmaputra Bridge will be 4.08 kms, to be completed at an approximate cost of Rs 3,197 crores.
The project was initially announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her visit to Assam in October 2021. Sitharaman stated that the bridge will also help combat riverbank erosion and improve transportation efficiency towards economic development of the State.
