GUWAHATI: Ministry of Education’s Performance Grading Index (PGI) has ranked Assam and Tripura at Level 4, making them the best among the northeastern states, while Arunachal Pradesh settled at the bottom of the grading system.
The PGI is a unique index for comprehensive analysis of the school education system in the states of the country. It is based on 70 indicators and two categories with five domains.
The scores are the aggregate scores of these five domains of educational attainment, namely,
1. Learning Outcomes (LO),
2. Access (A),
3. Infrastructure & Facilities (IF),
4. Equity (E) and
5. Governance Process (GP)
The data for PGI 2020-21 has been drawn from several sources, including surveys conducted all over India.
Assam and Tripura are ranked at Level 4, which essentially categorises the states securing a score between 801 and 850. Both the northeastern states have ranked on par with Chhattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand and Ladakh.
Mizoram stands at Level 5 (scores: 751–800), with five other states, while three states from the northeastern region, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland have been ranked at Level 6 (scores: 701–750).
Arunachal is at the bottom of the rankings at Level 7 (score: 651 - 700).
A total of six states have received Level 2 scores in the country including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Chandigarh is the only Union territory to have achieved the Level 2 scores.
No state in the country has attained the highest Level 1 status yet.
